    Posted: September 09 2014 at 5:08pm
Need some help from smarter minds. Picked up a new r9 280 last week, and have used 3 monitors for awhile. Couldn't run eyefinity with the 280, so I ordered an active dvi to mini dp adapter, hoping it would fix the issue. All monitors work, and all video card ports work, and any 2 combinations of monitors/port work, but plugging the 3rd in causes me to not be able to boot. The computer blue screens if it's already on when I plug the 3rd in.
I've broken down the hardware below, hoping someone can find the error.

Video card - R9 280. 2 x DVI output, 1 x HDMI output, 2 x mini display port outputs.

monitor 1 - DVI to computer, 1680 x 1050 resolution

monitor 2 - DVI to computer, 1920 x 1080 resolution

monitor 3 - VGA output to VGA-DVI converter to computer, 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Adapter - Active DVI to mini display port

Any combination of switching cords, adapters and ports will allow me to use 2 monitors, but plugging in a 3rd one always causes an error.

from what I am reading this is a common problem, the 290 can draw 300 watt of power from your unit leaving little else if your PSU is low watt and have other power hungry set up. what is your PSU ? No expert on AMD at all. I have always used Nvidia. with PSU fine and all your GPU drivers up to date, presuming you have no RAM issues then I would say.........

Your BIOS needs updating. Home built from scratch PC then I would say its a lot more straight forward to update. Bought a PC from Dell or similar in the world then its a wee bit harder as they usually try and block updates on the BIOS to support future tech. But most sites show work arounds to update past the PC manufacturer limits. BIOS upgrades are scary. just have two memory sticks, current version and the one you want t o upgrade to, just incase

No power issue. 1000w corsair PSU. Currently powering 1 of my old 7850's on another pci-e port to run the 3rd monitor, I can't live without it right now.

Would that really cause blue screens/failure to boot? I can see it not functioning, but bsod's seem a little excessive.

Always a good exscuse to replace both 720p monitors with some 1080 ones though. SO has been saying she wants a desktop with two monitors anyway. Might work out nicely to hand down these 2.

Critical thinking is in short supply these days. Why give sum1 the answer.Better to point in direction.Reverse the programing of the system is fun.Open your mind!!!!!

Running 3 MONITORS not the same resolution is not a good idea for 3 screen 1 picture.

We seen what critical thinking will do to you.....look no farther then Sith.

They taught him to hate his faith, his heritage and his culture.

I figured you were prime example of those that are indoctrinated.

Thanks for your understanding......

Heres what I find hilarious.
Hypothetical situation
Take 3 people, Scottish protestant conservative, Irish catholic liberal, Atheist libertarian American (sounds like the beginning of a joke!) All those 3 people come from completely different cultures, educations and backgrounds and yet can look at a foreign situation such as Gaza and can agree what is really going on.
Along comes a Neo-Conservative American who steadfastly refuses to recognise facts when placed in front of him and starts accusing people of being indoctrinated. Which do you think more likely? the 3 people from the the 3 different cultures are indoctrinated or the Neo-Con is???????? Riddle me this Batman
