pins and that look fine, I would have expected if there was issues with the cpu that I would not even get to bios and the motherboard would have bleeped and bleeped with no boot.

some smarty at HP forums gave me these possible words of wisdom..............

The reason it isn't working is likely to be the difference between the stepping the QuadCore CPU that HP uses and the one that you bought (B3) or that the CPU you bought on eBay is faulty. If you have access to another socket 775 mobo to test the CPU, you can put that possibility to bed.

The only difference that I am aware of is the power in watts that the CPU uses.

The SLACR version of the same CPU uses 10 Watts more. Yours is the SL9UM version.

looking about I think that the guy was right. The b3 seem to be the first gen Quad and even by 2007 were basically out the window and not supported.........

"For a B3 stepping you will have more difficulty finding a mobo that will support a 333MHz FSB with that kentsfield quad."

Just got back from vacation. If the quad got you to BIOS and to a blinking cursor I think it's a software issue. We really don't do many CPU upgrades but depending on your operating system. XP will especially lock on to the hardware and will resist any change.

If you have a live Linux disk or even your Windows disk try booting to it. If it works then the above scenario is true.

To add on to Z's post above, if you have another computer and can download a bootable linux platform, you can use imgburn to burn the ISO image file to a disc in order to attempt booting from it. Google should help you fill in the missing information pretty well Wink

If you don't have another PC handy, uhhhhhh... right. Sorry Tongue

all too late ...........

tried booting using w8 w7 vista and xp. no joy. research says my board is too new, even though it is quiet old. The one I bought was a more or less first generation quad core that was more or less gone by 2006 and boards after that date did not like the stepping of them. just bought another one that should work

thanks,,.,,,,, for now

woohoo the new CPU works to problem. previous one must have been to old as a first gen quad core.

Now the dilemma...................

new heatsink and fan or not.

Old dual core ran at about 32 degrees at idle. the quad core is sitting at about 40 - 45 degrees

under load playing games then the temp moves up to 58-65 degrees.

As much as I would love to remove my mobo and all other parts and cables attached to it I would rather avoid it. my current heatsink SCREWS in to the mobo, yes screws. must be a backing plate behind the mobo. So unlike most heatsinks sold, mine does not have a plastic base on the mobo to attach it.

(must say - although my windows experience score has moved from 5.6 to 7.2 for my cpu I am struggling to see the difference in performance lol)

so that makes it a little more complicated.

A lot of cases are built with a space in the motherboard tray to allow you to install a backing plate without having to take the motherboard out of the case.

If it were me, those temps would make me want to upgrade the heatsink, but technically I think you are safe.

The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ is what I use and recommend for air cooling. I think they have an upgraded version now. Remember to check clearance before you order.
