Very simple question, remembering I am Scottish and we are very tight with our money...........

Just bought a new CPU so upgrading from dual core to quad core. Do I need to upgrade and change the heatsink and fan or will it work fine

cheers

I don't believe there's a definitive answer for that one. It may not fit if the socket is different. But if it does line up you could certainly give it a try, just keep an eye on your CPU temps and make sure it stays within range. I am assuming it's a stock cooler, so I wouldn't recommend overclocking.

old one is e6550 @ 2.33. New one is q6600 @2.4, dual for quad. that's the highest cpu my motherboard supports.

It will fit. From a quick look it looks like they are pretty comparable, drawing the same voltages and running pretty close to to same speeds. As long as you weren't close to overheating before, I would say you are safe to keep using the same cooler. I would keep an eye on temps to be safe, but I always like to do that. I recommend Coretemp. A good benchmark is 40 degrees Celsius, any higher and you may want to consider a new cooler.

Do you already have the new cpu? Most come with a new heatsink and fan if bought brand new.

no its second hand made, £25 on ebay, usually go for about £45 for that model in the UK but I got lucky. My tempretures are fine on my current CPU, but given the time I have had it then it was probably time to break it down and put some new thermal paste on it anyways.

motherboard supports up to 8gb of ram so that's next on my shopping list

thanks for the replys guys

happiness, into despair into hope.............

all fitted up, switched on, boot past boot screen only to be faced with a blinking cursor on the screen and windows not loading. balls

into bios and I can see the correct cpu listed in the bios menu, some hope there that the cpu is not defective.

fit the old cpu back and everything boots up.

so currently faced with 2 issues.........

does the mobo support the CPU (I think it does) so then is the problem my outdated bios settings.

Latest bios settings are 5.13 and I have 5.07. That opens up a whole new problem as you can only update the bios from HP using bloody vista as your OS. So in that case I am looking to set up a partition on my HD and do a wee install of vista on a dual boot just to get the bios setting up to date so that it can recognise and run the new cpu.

So there is 2 questions I face

is my new cpu supported by my motherboard.

should my outdated version of bois at 5.07 be able to run my cpu, if so then that may point to another issue

details as follows:

IPIBL-LA (Berkeley) motherboard

intel 05 q6600
core 2 quad
sl90m malay
2.40ghz /8m/1066/05b
L715A729

why is nothing ever simple!

cheers

I don't have too much time to dig right now, but did you visually inspect all of the pins on the CPU? I had an issue once when I had some seriously bent pins on a brand new CPU. Had it on the mobo side as well. Just look them both over.
