Topic: Ice Man's new computer build Posted: October 26 2011 at 8:38pm |
Well, it's come down to that time again. Windows XP is no longer suitable for the new stuff, so I am building a new computer and keeping the old as a workstation.
So far I have: Power supply: PC Power and Cooling 750watt 80plus Silver, MK II http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703027 I don't need a full ATX case, so I am considering micro-ATX, perhaps a HTPC style case. I already have one, but there's a limitation on video card length. I may have to consider a different case if the video card I choose is too long. Video Card? : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150527 (too long for the case that I have) Will have to give some thought on the hard drives. Suggestions welcome for any of the above. |

Hey Erich I have that CPU o/c to 4.2 steady as a rock.
The RAM is 1.55 Volt and as I recall either my MOBO or CPU required 1.50 Volt RAM so I used 16GB of this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231445 Cheaper as well, consider 16gb. Don't know much about the MOBO or Graphics Card. Consider SSD instead of platter, you will never go back. That MOBO has SATA III so consider two of these in RAID 0: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227730 Even one and you will be impressed. More later gotta throw some chicken breasts on the grill.... Edited by Hagar - October 26 2011 at 10:29pm |

For graphics cards consider a pair of these, rock solid:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130590 Might have to bump up your power supply. Consider one of the SSD's, even a 128gb, and a second hard disk for data. Also, seriously consider a dedicated sound card. I have one of these and I had to re-rip our 700 cd's as the sound was so much better! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132018 I am concerned how this card will work with the Battlefield 3 game I have on order. I will let you know. But wow I wish I could get stoned and listen to Pink Floyd with this sound setup. |

Already bought the power supply. 7 year warranty, can't go wrong, lot of good reviews as well.
For the ram, I never had good luck running ram at it's rated speed so I figured I'd buy 2000 and clock it at 1600 and maybe lower the timings a little for more performance. But knowing my luck I'd only get as far as the timings already offered in the memory you linked. I might go SSD for the operating system and a pair disks in raid for data. |

Just make sure you SSD is big enough to hold OS and whatever games your playing at the time. Everything else can go on the data drives. SSD is hands down the single best part I have ever replaced in my cpu for a speed increase. I noticed more with it than I did going from single to quad core.

I've read quite a bit online saying that SSD's are supposed to have some fairly large discounts come black Friday. I'd hope to see some 120gb drives for around the $130-$150 mark. I found a few deals last month with rebates that fall within this range, which is what gives me hope. Might be worth waiting for.

That seems to be the norm with technology, "hurry up and wait." Most black friday sales are usually on gear that's been selling hard. No reason to put something on sale that sells good at it's current price point. But newegg will sometimes have a few sales on quality, sought-after components, the trouble is they run out of them. I am going to piece this puppy together. Next purchase will be the case once I find one the will have no trouble fitting the videocard I may want. |

Justin, I agree. I keep seeing them cheaper every time I look, and that would be a killer deal. Dath, I agree with you as well. Best upgrade I did. I can boot my computer from full off faster than many people can wake their comp's up from sleep!
Hagar, you're talking about throwing some serious wallet into that! This doesn't mean I don't want to do it, but sh*t! Dan's gfx card that's my gfx card, and I LOVE IT. AMD still has some great cards out there. Also, I won't buy EVGA because those f**kers pissed me off. Told me my lifetime warranty wasn't good anymore because they kept sending me sh*t that failed and I kept sending it back. Edited by Dantheman5187 - October 28 2011 at 4:19pm |

Hey Dan, yea I had a good Spring. I don't do ATI graphics cards since
they don't render 3d images well in my architectural CAD program. http://www.chiefarchitect.com/.
Erich, my last build was this case and I see Maximum PC named it in their top hardware listing: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139005 It will be my last case. Highly recommended. I see the price is way down. Edited by Hagar - October 28 2011 at 9:33pm |
