Howdy. I've recently picked up l4d2 and found my laptop can't quite handle it. In an effort to shoot a few zombies, I'd like to build a new system. I'm not entirely tech savvy, as some might know, and I'm hoping I can get a few looks before I start purchasing.

Hoping all of these components are compatible with each other. And as stupid as this question is, is it a complete system? I'd like to not overlook something small. I do have keyboard and mouse already. Any recommendations are welcomed as well. Thanks :)

I'll look through it later, Justin. Care if I ask what your budget is? That way, I can maybe find some ways to improve your choices. Maybe more bang for buck, but ideally, just find the same parts on sale :D I just bought some new parts myself and they are en route now! I'm excited to build it!

I had the graphic card your looking at, geforce 9500gt with 1gb ram.   To be honest i would spend a couple extra dollars on something better.

With it being non "nvidia" is has the worlds crappiest fan, i have had a few of these "low profile" cards, 8400, 8500 and the 9500.  served a purpose at the time but you wont get the most out of that crappy game you want to play.

going to get PF moaning about what i am about to say, but not everyone has money to burn!

i have an nvidia geforce 9600 far cry 2 edition  with 1.5gb of ram.  basically a 9600 gso.  great card and cheap too.  nice large fan and a full size card, not low profile.  plays the likes of mw2, tf2 and l4dpish4 on full setting no worries.

with the slightly better card you will need a slightly better power supply, i am running 750w and all is well.  Just make sure that on most full scale cards (not low profile cards) you will need a seperate 6 pin power supply, so your PSU should have this attachment.  in general low profile cards get thier power from the pci-e slot.

as for your 550w psu i would go for a healthy 700w +.  just to keep things tip top and incase of upgrades in the future.

Outside of those two bits of hardware i have not replaced anything else in recent times, so others will be more of a help there.

never biult my own pc, really fancy it, will be my next project in a couple of years i think Big%20smile

Budget lands right around $800 ideally. Theres a little cushion, as I don't need to purchase everything at once, though it would save on shipping.

What did Dan get? :D

Vorlon, I haven't touched the inside of a comp in years, I'm still confident though. If you can do a puzzle, you can build a comp :) It is new to me to have a video card need extra power though.

only issue with the mobo, in my opinion, is that it seems quite small and you would need to make sure that the graphic card fitted it.  Seems to be alot of stuff in a tight space, above the pci-e slots and to the front of it, giving length and fan hight  issues.

After i upgraded the card i desided that my next system would have as many pci slots as possible, 4?  Just not enough room on my mobo for sli graphic card set up.

that said, i know bugger all about biulding a system, and only going on my experiences and frustrations, buying parts for a pc must be the scariest thing ever, all that money and then praying it works, sooooo many options,  or the wife is going to kick the hell out of you.

You can get down to the 800$ buying a cheap PSU and finding the 2 Gb Kingston sticks they are only 56 bucks and you can put more on the mobo.

If you hurry...

http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx

It's a nice Cooler Master PSU. 80+ Bronze cert, 750 watt. I bought one :)

I'd get this monitor over that one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236050
or this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236079
I say this because a monitor is something you're going to have probably for a VERY long time and does not need upgrading like other hardware parts. These both have great ratings still and are bigger Big%20smile

Dan's new parts:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104118

I spent $600 (including shipping), and I'll get $30 back from a mail-in the RAM. Yay promo codes! Wink

This just popped up when I searched for the tower you posted...

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but the item you are looking for has been deactivated. Here are some similar products that you may wish to consider: (list a gazillion options here) "

Was your case ATX or Micro ATX or what? I ask, because if it would fit, I would take this Asus over your Biostar Wink

For CPU's... If you can, I would spend more here too. At the minimum, I would go with a quad core:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103650
Only $15 more, but you get an extra 50% performance according to benchmarks:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html To find the 2 CPU's, do Ctrl+F to open up the "Find" tool. Type 560 for the CPU you used, and 810 for the one I'm suggesting if you can manage it (although frankly, if you can manage even more, I'd go for their 6 core probably Tongue )

Back to tower now that it's fixed Wink I would not rush in to this purchase in this season if you have time. My favorite case is the Antec 900 (have one myself, dad has one for his PC I built, brother has one... yea). The price drops CRAZY on the case now and again, and if not that, there are other good cases that will be on MEGA sale. Remember, HOLIDAY SALES!!!! And Black Friday. If you have the ability to wait, you can probably find some KILLER deals. Be on the hunt, subscribe to their emails, etc. I'll look too Smile

reading the reviews on the original processor I posted it seems most people were easily able to unlock into a 4 core np. Is unlocking it into 4 core and getting a quad core the same thing?
