Topic: SATA Hard Drive help Posted: February 26 2010 at 7:50am |
a few months ago i built a new pc and i brought this hard drive which is a 500gb. it uses the sata interface when i try to install windows 98( its the only non upgrade os i have) it keeps telling me to download widows to the floppy disk, which i dont have. no instructions came with the hard drive its all in the motherboard book which is a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3, it says its recommended to use 2 of the exact hard drives to prevent raid, but you can use 1 if needed. The hard drive shows that its in (E:) and its in IDE channel 1 master.
so my question is how the heck can i get windows on my new hard drive?maybe need to get a higher OS? the book says to install XP vista or 7 but my XP is only the upgrade version.. is 98 not compatible? |

Appears to me its a motherboard issue. The chipset will not run 98/me.
Can see if your mobo has a updated bios/chipset "driver".

If you download the full version of the XP you have and use the CD key?

If I remember correctly, Win 98 (FE/SE) both had a 'boot floppy' option...yes the 3.5" variant. You can run/install the Win 98 (Exactly what version you have, i don't know) right from the CD; but this won't let you do the required "fdisk" command. As the 3.5" boot disk acts as a 'portable OS' allowing any setup requirements to take place; also as stated above, Win 98 (FE, if you have this one) doesn't allow for SATA interfaced physical drives; I think it will recognize SCSI interfaced physical drives. I think 98 SE also doesn't support SATA.

I just wonder why some 1 wants to install Win98, all kind of windows on isohunt.com, found there clean windows of any kind, using Xp x 64 for months without any problem its activated, downloads the updates and its not any light, black or some stupid modification.I have legit Xps and vistas, i prefer this one first of all because its 64 bit, its english and dont crash!God bless the seeders.

I'd try sticking in the XP upgrade and see if it will boot from it. If so try to install.
