I can't get windows XP pro to load.  I tried booting into safe mode and last working configuration, gets stuck and won't load.  Any suggestions?  I really don't want to spend the next 18 hours re-installing all of my programs.

Had same issue , with corupt OS, though was due to pushing clocks and bumpin volts way too far. Clean install only solution. Let me know what you think the reason was?  Out of curiosity, could you get past OS load up screen?

tried to boot on XP PRO CD and run repair ?

chkdsk and chkntfs can do miracles too sometimes

btw if you reinstall you have special edition of XP ont the web which include most of common softs (like firefox, updated codecs, security updates and many many other things)

can't advise you one though, I know only the French ones ^^

pushing clocks steal ? I have a E6550 which runs at 3.5Ghz, what about you :D

I couldn't get past the loading screen at all.  Complete freeze.  Couldn't load safe mode.  Windows XP disk wouldn't allow me to choose "Repair" and all causes of that didn't look so great.  Corruption galore.  I'm ok with the reinstall as I was randomly getting blue screens every now and then.

I'm back on my machine now, getting everything reloaded.

freezing and blue screens are usually memory problem. check memory then check file system (chkdsk). also you may want to check for bad sectors. heres a nice boot cd with tools to do this stuff and a lot more:
