"I ate his liver with some fava bean *makes slurping sound*"
Oh yea.. One tip; Stay as detached as possible, or their problems become your problems and you lose yourself trying to help them. It can lead to being overwhelmed, which leads to feelings of inadequacy and depression eventually. Just make sure you remember their problems are theirs; you're just trying to help THEM solve it all. Hey Vincewa. I have a minor in Psychology and I have a year left until I get a master's certifying me as a LPC. (Licensed Professional Counselor) In order to work in this field and make any money, the rule is you have to have at least a graduate degree unless you don't mind getting paid $9.00 an hour making junkies appointments at the meth clinic. That is pretty much all a bachelor's degree in psychology will get you. There is also a big distinction between a psychologist and a psychiatrist. Psychologists do not prescribe medication. Psychiatrists do. A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor that took a few extra hours of psychology in med school and got a licensure as a psychiatrist. Psychologists focus on behavior changing through extensive research based therapy. Both of these professions require a doctorate degree. Or there is the LPC like I am pursuing. An LPC typically specializes in a specific area, such as Drug/Alcohol rehabilitation, Marriage and Family, General rehabilitation (Behavior Disorders), Childhood, etc. Psychologists and LPCs typically work together with a Psychiatrist at mental health clinics/institutions/hospitals and come up with an overall plan for patients. Lots of school, but at least it's interesting. Good luck to you. Shebangs |
